Rally Liepāja 2017 to take place from October 6 to 8
16.11.2016

Liepāja, November 16, 2016

Rally Liepāja, which is a part of the FIA European Rally Championship for the fifth year in a row, will take place on Liepāja and Kuldīga region roads from October 6 to 8, 2017. A total of eight events are currently included in the FIA European Rally Championship provisional calendar, with an option to increase to ten. This year’s Rally Liepāja was won by Latvian crew Ralfs Sirmacis / Artūrs Šimins, who concluded the championship in third position.

In 2017, Rally di Roma Capitale will join the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC), becoming one of the eight events already included in the provisional calendar, set to be ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council when it meets in Vienna (Austria) on November 30. Rally di Roma Capitale will be an asphalt event, and will feature a stage that passes the world-famous Colosseum. ERC will return to Italy for the first time since the 2013 Rally Sanremo.

The Italian round joins seven already announced FIA European Rally Championship rounds: Acropolis Rally**, Azores Airlines Rallye, Barum Czech Rally Zlín, Cyprus Rally, Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés, Rally Liepāja and Rally Rzeszow. Meanwhile, three rallies from 2016 will not return to the ERC calendar, including auto24 Rally Estonia, making Rally Liepāja the only FIA European Rally Championship event taking place in the Baltic States.

FIA European Rally Championship promoter Eurosport Events is considering adding no more than two events to the provisional calendar, to increase the total number of championship rounds to ten. It is expected that a crew’s six best results will count towards the championship.

FIA ERC Junior Championship will consist of six rounds, two of which will be on gravel while the other will be asphalt events. Five of the six rounds have already been confirmed, one of which will be Rally Liepāja, with this being the fourth time it will host a FIA ERC Junior championship round. Four best results will be used in to determine the Junior champion.

“I am very happy that Latvia is one of just three countries which has hosted a FIA European Rally Championship round each year since Eurosport Events took over in 2012. Eight events are currently confirmed (which is two less than last year), meaning that every round will be even more important and possibly have more crews competing. Similarly to this year, Rally Liepāja will be on the back end of the championship calendar, adding a bit of intrigue to the results, as we could determine the European champions right here in Latvia! In addition, moving Rally Liepāja from February to October will showcase Latvia as a great tourist destination in autumn for more than 30 million Eurosport viewers around the world!” comments RA EVENTS director Raimonds Strokšs.

“We’re very pleased to be joining forces with Motorsport Italia, which launched Rally di Roma Capitale three years ago and has managed its rise as a top Italian championship event. We’re also delighted to be continuing our long-term agreements with some of Europe’s best rallies on asphalt and gravel. There will be a maximum of 10 rallies and we’re considering adding at least one more event, in central Europe, to the current provisional schedule.” FIA European Rally Championship coordinator Jean-Baptiste Ley.
